Still figuring out that Father’s Day Gift? Try Vitamin D for your D-ad

Father's Day Vitamin D

Vitamin D-ad!

The idea of giving your father vitamin D as a Father’s Day present may sound a bit cheesy; however, this might be the best gift you can give. After all, the gift of health is a gift we can cherish forever.

Vitamin D and Men’s Health

Vitamin D plays an important role in men’s health! Did you know that vitamin D boosts testosterone levels? Vitamin D also helps to decrease the chances and affects of prostate cancer and heart disease.

Prostate cancer is the most common cause of death from cancer among men over the age of 75. And, prostate cancer has been one of the most studied topics in vitamin D research!

4,000 IU/day greatly helps Men with Low-Risk Prostate Cancer

Research into the benefits of vitamin D for prostate cancer has come far. Just this past year, a team of doctors discovered that 4,000 IU/day helped men with low-risk prostate cancer by lowering their Gleason score and number of “positive cores.”

Recent Study Shows Higher Vitamin D Levels can lower Risks of Dying from Heart Disease

Men are also at a higher risk for heart disease. Men ages 35-64 are about four times more likely than women to die from heart disease. Observational studies suggest low vitamin D levels are associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. A recent study published last month suggests higher vitamin D levels can lower the risk of dying from heart disease.

Vitamin D also helps to Increase Testosterone Levels

Vitamin D boosts testosterone levels! In a randomized controlled trial, 3,300 IU/day of vitamin D increased testosterone levels by 30-40%. In men, testosterone is important for reproduction tissues like the testis and prostate, and it's also important for key masculine features like increased muscle, bone mass, and the growth of body hair.

Food Pyramid Gets a Facelift

New Food Pyramid Shaped as a Plate Makes Choosing Healthy Meals Easier

The new food pyramid, called MyPlate, was introduced to show people how a typical meal should look.  Fruits and vegetables contain important nutrients such as fiber and potassium that help reduce the risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Whole grains should be consumed, allowing the food to be broken down slowly while preventing sharp spikes in blood glucose while also helping to lower cholesterol.  Protein sources should consist of lean meats including at least 8 oz of fish per week. Calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D are some of the reasons that having dairy at each meal is very beneficial.

The new MyPlate also shows the proper portion size when compared to your standard dinner plate.  This differs from the food pyramids of the past that gave recommendations as to how many servings one should consume from each individual food group with no attention paid to portion size.

Chiropractic Care for Sports Rehabilitation

Many professional athletes now use chiropractic care to achieve maximum performance and recovery.

Chiropractic care has proven very beneficial in the recovery of sports injuries. Many professional teams have a designated team chiropractor, but chiropractic care is also useful in injuries that occur during recreational activities as well.

DON'T WAIT!! Waiting on Treatment for Lower Back Pain Leads to Increases Incidence of Chronic Lower Back Pain

Low Back Pain

Waiting on Treatment for Lower Back Pain Leads to an Increased Incidence in Chronic Lower Back Pain and Incomplete Recovery

A 2011 study by Lena Nordeman at the Swedish University of Gothenburg found that patients who waited four weeks to get physiotherapy treatment for their lower back pain had poorer outcomes compared to  patients who were seen within 48 hours.  The study looked at 60 patients with lower back pain and patients with lower back and leg pain.  The Patients in this study had had pain for three to twelve weeks.

In the study, patients suffering from back pain were either put on a wait list for a month, then received physiotherapy; or were treated within two days by a physiotherapist.  Six months after they were discharged from physiotherapy, the level of perceived pain was significantly higher in the group that had been on the wait list.  The complete study can be found here: http://gupea.ub.gu.se/bitstream/2077/24585/1/gupea_2077_24585_1.pdf.

Rosa Chiropractic Rockville has successfully treated patients who have had pain for decades, providing significant relief to their pains

This correlates to what happens at Rosa Chiropractic Rockville, and for pretty much all musculoskeletal complaints, not just for back pain.  When patients come in to our Rockville office, within days rather than weeks after the start of the back pain, their treatment takes less time and works much faster.   Weeks are generally better than months, and months are better than years, and years are better than decades.  Although, our Rockville office has successfully treated patients who have had pain for decades, providing significant relief to their pains.

Sometimes patients are told by their primary care provider or even their physical therapist or chiropractor to wait and see if the pain will go away with time.  If you've been waiting on pain to go away, for days or decades and have a question if we can help, please give me a call.  If I think we can, we'd be happy to see you. If I think you're time would be better spent seeing a different kind of professional first, I'll tell you that too.

Chiropractic Treatment Better than Drugs for Neck Pain

neck pain

Consider Chiropractic Treatment before you “Pop” another Pill for Your Neck Pain

A new study funded by the National Institute of Health, has found the best way to get rid of that troublesome neck pain is not to "pop" another pain medication. The study of over 272 patients found that chiropractic treatment is the best method in relieving neck pain available. The study found that patients treated by a chiropractor alone rated the highest in pain relief after a 12 week period compared to patients treated by exercise or drugs. In fact after a 12 week period those patients who exercised or used a chiropractor were over twice as likely pain free in comparison to patients who relied on medicine.

The Study Shows Chiropractic Treatment is the Most Effective Remedy for Neck Pain

The results reveal the necessity of chiropractic care when it comes to neck pain– 32 percent of patients treated by a chiropractor were pain free, compared to 30 percent of those who exercised and only 13 percent of those who took medication as treatment after a 12 week period. Dr. Lee Green, professor of family medicine at the University of Michigan says, “Neck pain is a mechanical problem, and it makes sense that mechanical treatment works better than a chemical one.”

Harvard Research David Eisenberg Showed Patients with Lower Back Pain Benefited Greatly from Chiropractic Care

A recent pilot study by noted Harvard Researcher David Eisenberg and others has shown that patients with lower back pain who had chiropractic and massage therapy added to their treatment plan benefited more than patients who only had conventional medical treatment.  The patients also had acupuncture, physical therapy and other treatments as needed.  The article is available FREE (for now) at the following link:  http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdfplus/10.1089/acm.2011.0408

Chiropractic Care Greatly Reduced the Lower Back Pain of Patients who Participated in the Study

Patients in the wing of the study receiving chiropractic care had significantly less pain, significantly less worry, less pain and higher functional status. The study included people who did and who did not have sciatica (lower back pain with leg pain or leg symptoms associated with back pain).

Rosa Chiropractic Rockville uses Chiropractic Manipulations to Treat Lower Back Pain

This article ads to a growing body of research showing benefit of chiropractic and other alternative medical approaches above and beyond that afforded by conventional medicine.  At Rosa Chiropractice of Rockville, we use chiropractic along with physical therapy and brief massage therapy approaches.  Advanced techniques we utilize include high powered laser therapy, myofascial release and other soft tissue techniques, ergonomic advice, stretching and exercise instruction and kinesiotape.
